Augusta, Georgia

Augusta (population 195,000) is the second oldest city, after Savannah, in Georgia.  It was founded in 1736, served as a fur trading fort and military outpost and was occupied and destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War.  The city rebuilt and then survived the Civil War and so has a plethora of beautiful antebellum homes on tree lined streets.  The Masters Golf Tournament is, of course, played here, but Augusta is also home to a popular equestrian event (Cutting Horse Futurity) and several water-sports events on the river each year.
