| Macon,
Georgia
Macon is the largest city in
the middle of the state and boasts more than
5000 buildings on the National Register of
Historic Places. The city was relatively
spared from much damage during the Civil War
(even Sherman bypassed it on his March to the
Sea), so hundreds of antebellum and historical
homes still grace its streets. The most
impressive of these may be the spectacular
Italian Renaissance-style Hay House, famous for
its 30 foot ceilings, stunning stained glass and
500 lb front doors.
You'll also want to visit the
Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Many black
musicians, including Otis Redding, Little
Richard and James Brown, got their start here.
